Along with social media marketing, the newsletter wars are continuing to heat up, and Twitter seems to have jumped into the game when it bought newsletter service “Revue” in January this year. Soon, Twitter will be adding a new feature, a subscription button, for newsletter signups. Twitter expects the subscribe button to come to profiles on the web and Android first and iOS a little later. 

While the launch date is unknown, social media agencies are already prepping to benefit from the new subscription button strategically. The microblogging site “Twitter” believes it is just the latest feature introduced in its quest to create more user opportunities and revenue generation. With that background, let’s take a closer look into what we can expect from this new feature. 


The new “subscribe button” ‘s primary purpose is to help newsletter writers and long-form content curators leverage their existing Twitter followers to grow their subscriber base. This means the soon-to-be added feature gives writers a tool to turn their growing and engaged Twitter audience into newsletter subscribers. In addition, writers have the option of running free or paid newsletters on Revue, and Twitter takes up a five percent cut of the subscription paid to newsletters.

The new feature is also expected to make Revue a more enticing option for anyone thinking about starting a newsletter- especially for those who already have a well-established follower base. 

Further, Twitter stands as the leading communication platform for many people in the public eye when it comes to social media management. So when a newsletter subscribe button is easily visible on a famous person’s Twitter profile, it can prompt visitors to sign up. 

How is it expected to work? 

The subscribe button will appear on the user’s profile underneath the “mutual followers” section. In addition, the name of the newsletter and a brief description of what it contains will be displayed along with a count of how many subscribers it has. 

When a user hits the subscribe button, they will receive a notification informing them that their email address will be shared with the newsletter creator. This screen will allow users to get an overview, i.e., read a sample before officially handing over their information. 

The final step will require the user to confirm their subscription by clicking the link in their email. 

In simple terms, when you visit a profile of someone who runs a Revue newsletter, you’ll be able to subscribe with a few clicks. Once you’re done subscribing, Revue will start sending the newsletter to the email address that’s tied to your Twitter account.


The subscribe button will be live prominently on the profile pages of those who choose to activate the new feature and be available to anyone with a Revue account. Meaning publishers who have Revue newsletters will be able to activate this feature directly in Revue. Similarly, users who visit the writer’s profile on Twitter can subscribe directly as well. 

As publishers have the option of offering paid newsletter subscriptions through Revue, the new feature is also expected to create a mode where users can monetize their Twitter profiles.
