Getting started on social media can be overwhelming with so many networks at your disposal, if you don’t have a social media agency at hand at help you, you wouldn’t know which platform would suit your business and which networks you should invest time in.

You need to focus on a sensible strategy so that it fits your goals and resources.

Who is your target audience? Define them. Start by looking at the key demographics of the people you are trying to reach, whether by age, gender, location or interests. What problems are your audiences faced with? How can you help resolve these problems? Do not get hung up on everyone, it is your key demographic that will get you over the finish line.

Have a successful content strategy. You need to create fresh, high quality content but what do you write about? First, you need to make your content feel relevant and in a way that addresses the problems of your demographic. Listen to the common questions from your followers and answer them through your content.

Do your followers have buyer’s pain? Create educational content for them. Offer downloadable content like checklists, ebooks, infographics and videos. Make it truly educational and helpful so that your followers will likely share it on social media to expand its reach.

Focus on two to three social media platforms. While it is tempting to have an online presence on all social media networks you need to focus on platforms your audience is also on. If you have a younger audience who is mostly on Instagram there is no point in having a presence on LinkedIn. Stick to your audience and follow them around wherever they go. Nurture your audience, build on it and sustain the community.

You need a posting and engagement schedule. While you cannot be engaging with your audience around the clock, because you obviously have a business to run, you also need to engage consistently and at relevant times of the day. How frequently do you plan to engage with your followers? A social media company will set a guide to help you.

Measure the results. It is imperative you track and measure your success because if your current strategy is not working it is time to adjust your tactics. Which posts are your followers responding to? Which generate the most buzz? Set goals and start having a scorecard. Social media is not magic, it doesn’t become successful overnight unless you happen to be a celebrity. It takes time and effort to see results. You can always adjust your guide, content and buyer persona to fine tune the strategy and generate consistent results.
