If you are still contemplating Instagram for your business, it is time to put away the doubts and join one of the most active and engaging social media platforms. It has 400 million active users and is growing everyday. It also has better user engagement than both Facebook and Twitter. With so much potential at your fingertips, many marketers make seemingly innocent or potentially massive mistakes. Remember rookie mistakes will turn off people, they expect you as a business to excel at these things.

The biggest mistake is to post visuals you haven’t created. Even if you only want to quote something, do not copy from another person’s post. Take some time, get creative and use only original content. Also, it helps avoid copyright issues. When you make an effort to post original images it makes your business account appear legitimate and genuine. It is easy to copy off others and more challenging to make something your own. Followers know and understand the difference.

Avoid posting routine product images. This can get boring. Monotony can totally turn people away from your Instagram page. Make your product images appear exciting and interesting. Products should increase curiosity in followers. It is only when people are intrigued or curious they will pay attention to what you have on offer and consider purchasing it. Develop a unique style to showcase your products and services.

Don’t expect users to come to you. You need to reach out to them. If you want to grow your audience, go to them. Engage with your followers every chance you get. Track keywords and hashtags, favourite posts and comment on images, keep interacting with your audience and pay attention to them whenever you get the opportunity.

Have an Instagram advertising strategy. You shouldn’t be posting random photos or random thoughts. It should be well planned out and well executed. The images and content should have something to do with your brand. It should also relate to your audience. Mix your photos with a balance of products and services, events, lifestyle and current news. Keep it hip, young and engaging.

Don’t oversell. This is a common mistake made by brands time and again. Instagram is not just about selling your product or service. It is first about engagement, second about building trust and credibility. And as a result of creating a conversation, it is likely people will want to purchase from you. However, it should resonate with your audience first.
