It is daunting to think of designing a website. There is a volume of information available which needs to be incorporated and organized that makes the process seem more complicated. How do you organize the structure and plan the site before you get started?

A sitemap is an effective tool when putting together a website. It helps you organize the content, clarify the pages that need to be on your site and eliminate the pages you won’t need. It is a flow-chart or outline to create the website you need. This is the first step to a web design company creating a specific website for your business. There has to be an organized process with all the little steps in-between to take you to the end result.

What is the purpose and goal of your website? If your site has no purpose or goal things will get pretty disorganized right from the start. Sites like this are hard to navigate and offer a poor user experience. Your visitor will be left feeling confused and this is the last thing you want your visitor to feel. Remember, conversions depend on people visiting your site and enjoying a good user experience.

Do not duplicate your content. If you say something on one page, you don’t need another page with the exact same information. With a sitemap you will know which content goes on what page, it will help you avoid duplicating content. When the same content is found in different pages it can lead to confusion. Simplify things when designing your website.

Minimize the steps in your conversion funnel. Do not confuse visitors with an obstacle race when they visit your website. The conversion process should just take them from A to B. The more steps you include the more chances the visitor has to leave the process altogether. The sitemap will help you figure out how many steps you actually need and eliminate the unnecessary steps altogether. The sitemap will ensure you are not adding any extra steps.

When designing your website make certain everyone is on the same page. The sitemap should be easily accessible to those working on the project. When changes are made to it, everyone should be able to see. It is not a static document, it indicates what requires progress and what further work needs to be done.
