While most marketers are aware that social media is crucial to building an audience, only one third of them actually have a long term social media marketing strategy in mind. While you may think social media marketing can be done whenever you feel like it, you couldn’t be more wrong. It requires hard work, commitment and a long term strategy to reap the benefits. Let’s take a look at a successful social media campaign that worked long term to gain success for their brand.

Colgate Smile Campaign

Many of you have heard of Colgate toothpaste. Last year they introduced a campaign, Colgate Smile which asked users to submit snapshot of smiles to promote them on billboards, in stores and on the market. It was a seamless promotion taking place both online and offline. Colgate also asked users to share inspirational stories behind the smile. This led to people’s response over the brand being positive, fun and healthy. The Smiles campaign is a fully flourishing marketing plan that is still going strong today with more and more users getting involved.

Now let’s look at actions a social media company will take to make a long term strategy successful.

Put your followers first

Give your followers a voice in the community. Let your followers discuss the things they want to talk about, instead of always talking about what interest you or the company. Let it be a natural conversation which eventually turns to your product, without you having to forcibly push your product in their faces.

Look at what really works

Some ideas may sound great on paper but when it comes to making it work, it has a lot of flaws. Learn to be flexible and if you feel like something is not working, change it.

Give your brand a voice

Make your brand personality standout, however, keep it consistent across all social media platforms. You cannot promote one thing on Facebook and another on Twitter. It should be the same. Consistency increases credibility, and soon your followers will learn to trust you.

Measure results

It is good to keep track of social media results, however, measure what really matters. Look at the big picture, instead of looking at short and long term campaigns one by one. It should all come together. This is what will give you the real results.
